There’s something almost sacred about the first thing you put in your body each morning. I stumbled onto this tonic last fall after a week of traveling, eating way too many airport meals, and feeling completely sluggish. My grandmother always swore by a glass of warm lemon water before breakfast, but I wanted something with a little more kick — something that actually made me feel like I was resetting. After experimenting with different ratios and ingredients, this is the one I keep coming back to. It’s become my non-negotiable morning ritual, and honestly, the difference in my energy and digestion has been night and day.

aka The Morning Reset Elixir

Ingredients

  • 1 cup filtered water, warmed (not boiling — about 110°F/43°C)
  • 1 tablespoon raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with the mother — Bragg’s is great)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice (about half a lemon)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, finely grated
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey (use pure maple syrup for a vegan option)
  • 1 small pinch of ground cayenne pepper (optional, for extra circulation boost)
  • 1 pinch of ground Ceylon cinnamon
  • 1 thin slice of fresh turmeric root (or ¼ teaspoon ground turmeric)

Instructions

  1. Warm the water: Heat your filtered water until it’s warm to the touch but not hot — you want it comfortable to sip, around 110°F. Boiling water can destroy some of the beneficial enzymes in the apple cider vinegar and raw honey.
  2. Grate the ginger: Use a microplane or fine grater to grate the fresh ginger directly into your favorite mug. If using fresh turmeric, grate that in too. The finer you grate, the more flavor and nutrients you’ll extract.
  3. Add the liquids: Pour the warm water into the mug, then add the apple cider vinegar and fresh lemon juice. Stir gently to combine.
  4. Sweeten and spice: Stir in the raw honey until it dissolves completely. Add the pinch of Ceylon cinnamon and cayenne pepper if using. The cayenne is subtle at this amount — just enough to warm your chest without any burn.
  5. Steep and sip: Let the tonic sit for 1-2 minutes so the ginger and turmeric can infuse. Give it one final stir and drink it slowly on an empty stomach, ideally 15-20 minutes before breakfast.

Tips

  • Protect your enamel: Apple cider vinegar is acidic. Sip through a stainless steel or glass straw, and rinse your mouth with plain water afterward. Don’t brush your teeth for at least 30 minutes after drinking.
  • Batch your ginger: Grate a week’s worth of fresh ginger and freeze it in a small ice cube tray with a splash of water. Pop one out each morning — saves time and keeps it fresh.
  • Start slow: If you’re new to ACV, start with just 1 teaspoon and work your way up to a full tablespoon over a week or two.
  • Best in the morning: This tonic works best on an empty stomach first thing in the morning. It helps kickstart your digestion and sets a clean tone for the rest of the day.
  • Ceylon vs. Cassia cinnamon: Always choose Ceylon (“true”) cinnamon — it’s lower in coumarin and safer for daily use compared to the more common Cassia variety.
