Frequently Asked Questions

Recipe Questions

Can I substitute ingredients in your recipes?

Absolutely! We encourage you to make recipes your own. Check the Tips section at the bottom of each recipe for suggested substitutions. For dietary swaps, our Gluten Free and Plant Power categories offer great alternatives.

How do I adjust recipes for more or fewer servings?

Most recipes can be scaled up or down proportionally. Simply multiply or divide the ingredient amounts by the same factor. For baking recipes, we recommend sticking closer to the original amounts as ratios are more precise.

Can I make these recipes ahead of time?

Many of our recipes include make-ahead tips. Generally, soups, stews, and casseroles reheat beautifully. Salads and dishes with crispy elements are best made fresh. Check each recipe’s Tips section for specific storage guidance.

How long do leftovers last?

Most cooked dishes keep 3-4 days refrigerated in an airtight container. Soups and stews often taste even better the next day! For longer storage, many recipes freeze well for up to 3 months.

Cooking Tips

What does “season to taste” mean?

This means adding salt, pepper, or other seasonings according to your personal preference. Start with less than you think you need, taste, and add more gradually. You can always add more but can’t take it away!

Why do my baked goods turn out different than expected?

Baking is a science! Common issues include not measuring accurately (use a kitchen scale for best results), oven temperature being off (use an oven thermometer), or ingredients being at the wrong temperature. Room temperature eggs and butter make a big difference.

What’s the best way to store fresh herbs?

Treat soft herbs like cilantro and parsley like flowers—trim stems and place in a glass of water in the fridge, covered loosely with a plastic bag. Hardy herbs like rosemary and thyme can be wrapped in a damp paper towel and stored in a zip-lock bag.

How do I know when meat is done?

Use an instant-read thermometer for accuracy. Safe internal temperatures: Chicken 165°F (74°C), Ground beef 160°F (71°C), Pork 145°F (63°C), Steak medium-rare 130°F (54°C). Always let meat rest 5-10 minutes before cutting.
